Output - High vs. Low

Most music we discuss here has not been recorded with really extreme
pups. IMO, you want the guitar to produce a warm, rich, ballanced sound. A pup should enhance what
the guitar is producing tonally -- not completely overshadow it. Yes
it can be a hi-output pup, but you can take a pretty basic PAF or
Duncan Distortion or JB and metal it up nicely from the amp or the amp with a pedal in front of it.
