I'm surprised you didn't know, both Lord and Blackmore have been quite forthcoming about it.

To me Child in Time's influence on heavy metal vocals alone is inestimable. Hard to imagine so many of our favorite, quasi-operatic singers without it imo.

A huge personal favorite of mine.

Yeah, I've always loved the song, but I never knew they lifted it.

I know they lifted Black Night from Ricky Nelson's Summertime

I'll never forget when I found out about Black Knight, it was like finding out there was no Santa Claus. I'm more mature now, and can see how he only stole what he did to make something great.

Child in Time is a top 5 song for me, bulletproof imo (especially the hair-raising Made in Japan performance).

The funny thing about Black Night was that they got pissed at the pub, came back and wrote it drunk, in like 5 minutes.

I actually knew about Child in Time. It was in the news a few years ago, IIRC. After listening to the YT clips it was undeniable.

What I didn’t know is that Blackmore and Lord had acknowledged it. I am quite surprised RB gave the Zep guys a hard time about stuff like that if he was guilty of the same thing, but then again Zep was more blatant about it I guess. Plus RB gave everybody a hard time, period.

That said, what they did with that song is such a monumental outcome that I can’t blame them about anything, really. That is Purple at its best, and precious few have managed to even come close to it.

I'm torn between Highway Star and Child in Time as their Ultimate Classic. In specific ways, both are so ridiculously ahead of their time as to be from another dimension.

I played Highway Star for my wife for the first time in her whole life five years ago and she asked "is that Yngwie playing the solo"? lol

Guys....all due respect, these stories are old...... like, if you were paying attention to the DP universe way back when, this info. was readily available over 3 decades ago. I have VHS tapes detailing these stories from the early 90s.Ditto various magazine articles etc. ...... it's just that now, these tales are surfacing on YT & it's like some big revelation or something.Ok, I'm kind of a Blackmore freak & always basically went outta my way to obtain anything info. related I could, so I have a pretty nice stash of magazines/books etc. but these tales are not news.

I had no idea either.
Nice that everyone shook hands and there was no acrimony. Whereas nowadays...
