Interesting article:

I presume it's similar for Spotify. I know some artists at the low end of the earning tree (guys like us) have removed their music from Spotify (and probably Pandora as well) because they do better if people can't just stream their music.

Interesting that Sirius Radio seems to pay the best per-play. Something to note for any of us who actively trying to push our music out into the world (Bevar Sea, Bedowyn, Feints etc.).

It's depressing how the actual creators of the music have been screwed year after decade after genre...

Nothing changes, just the methods.

Unless you have a Peter Grant in your corner, I guess, although that brings it's own problems.

It's appaling, the music industry is capitalism at its worst!

I don't and will never use streaming companies like Spotify, I want control over my music. Broadcast radio is dying a slow lingering death due to its own greed and mismanagement...in the car and mobile I have access to the best radio station ever, its called my MP3 player; no self obsessed dickhead DJs with verbal diarrhoea, no ads, better audio quality than any UK digital radio station (and most FM ones) and most importantly no shit music!...I own all my own music, most of it is on CD or vinyl so I have my own master sources to go back to if necessary. Spotify and the like can pull the plug on any artist or listener at anytime, censor songs and monitor what you are listening to.... nope not for me I'm afraid.

Yeah, I've ranted against the spotify model before. My band's debut album is up on spotify and rhapsody though, for the same reason it's up on torrents and on youtube as well. I'm not expecting any revenue from there, but I just hope eventually a few of those who hear it attend our shows and buy some merch. I'm okay with it really - lots of people discover us thanks to the music being on youtube. I know a guy who maintains a youtube channel where he goes around discovering obscure doom related bands and uploads to his channel - most often without permission and illegally. But I've since subscribed to the channel because he was just sharing a lot of cool new music, and I'm now facebook friends with him. It's all good as far as I'm concerned.

As a consumer, Spotify is pretty great. For $10 a month, I have access to THOUSANDS of albums I don't have to buy COMMERCIAL free.

As an artist, I find it pretty appalling.

The music industry has largely eaten itself. Monopolies run rampant. All radio is Clear Channel. All veunues are Live Nation. Clear Channel and Live Nation are the same company somewhere up the chain. Only a few major labels are left, and they cater to the old, established acts, on newer acts than sell millions of units. Minor and independent labels have no money to spend. Pretty much ANYONE can get on an Independent label now, but that and a dollar won't buy you a cup of coffee.

There's not much money in touring for unknowns --even for the big festivals like S by SW. Even if you get on a bill, no one pays your expenses for getting there or staying there. Bands do it to "break big," but you have a better shot of doing that by landing TV commercials. Placing music in TV, Movies, and believe it or not, video games, is the last bastion of decent money in "the music business" -- largely, I think, because it is outside of the music business.

Same here. I can't get used to the idea of paying for music that I don't own physically, or at least mp3 files that I can backup in different places.

As a guy who has made his living in Radio for just about 30 years now, I sadly have to agree with this statement.

Somewhere up the chain? How about at the BEGINNING of the chain :biggrin2: Live Nation is just another underperforming division of Clear Channel. Don't worry though, Clear Channel is in SO much debt, (close to 20 BILLION dollars), that they'll probably have to sell off Live Nation SOON. It wouldn't surprise me if this happened within the next couple years.

If a DJ knows when and what to say I love having them around.

Note to all DJs on the forum. The band and song title should be said both before And After a song plays. God knows how many times I've flipped to a different station, found myself listening to something killer that I'd purchase if I knew what it was, waited for the end of the tune focused and ready to take down the info and instead found myself banging my head on the dashboard as the DJ introduced the next tune. :pissed: :wall: :chainsaw:
