Hybrid Picking
Do any Dinos here hybrid pick? The only famous one I know that does this was Michael Lee Firkins, from Shrapnel Records. I learned the style about 20 years ago when I was playing a lot of country, and I've always done it since, no matter what style I'm playing. Unlike most Nashville players, don't have real fingernails, so i just use my fingertips, and I changed my pick so the attack is similarly dark and dry on the picked notes. When I need a brighter sound, I just dig in and snap the strings. I just think it's really useful, particularly for double stops and triads. it's also good for pedal tone licks. Learning to do it felt like growing another right hand.

I guess Jeff Beck was the king of that stuff. I see other Dino players do bits of it -- Iommi and Page come to mind, but it's not a big part of their bag, the way it is for a guy like Greg Koch.

Re: Hybrid Picking
I've find myself experimenting more and more with this technique. It's really cool and useful, and makes some licks easier. I can't really shred with it but I'm getting more and more comfortable with it.
Joel Hoekstra is a guy that gets a lot of milage from this. He will use to play John Sykes picking lines from the Whitesnake solos and it sounds super clean, fast and precise.

Re: Hybrid Picking
once i started learning this, along with country guitar in general, i slowed way down. i was much faster when all i did was alternate pick and legato. i think i play more melodically now because of it, though i really don't play country guitar anymore.merlo_zeppelin wrote: ↑Sat Dec 21, 2024 7:17 am I've find myself experimenting more and more with this technique. Re: Hybrid Picking
I can do hybrid, but not my thing. It's usefull for some large interval gaps, and allows to have different tone in each stroke, because the plectrum and the flesh produce diffente sound. Also, you can snap the strintg plugged with the finger. Is fun but in my type of music, sterille.
Chek Eric Johnson, he uses hybrid picking all the way. Very famous Ah Via Musicon intro riff (not exactly dino, but...).

Re: Hybrid Picking
I've been hybrid picking since I saw Brett Garsed when I was at GIT.
I play a lot of country stuff, mostly Jerry Reed and Chet Atkins inspired stuff and you have to hybrid for that.
It's a lot of fun and definitely unlocks new stuff, especially for wider intervals.

Coincidentally Bret has recently released a hybrid picking book:

playing a Telecaster, i use a LOT of the dig in and snap method with my fingertips. it's good with a Tele, in particular.eduardoritos wrote: ↑Wed Jan 01, 2025 7:11 pm I can do hybrid, but not my thing. A local buddy of mine, Hadar Levi, dude is as Dino as it gets and employs a lot of hybrid picking in his technique.
