Learning My First "Shreddy" Song
Learning My First "Shreddy" Song
I've been working on my chops all year, but the best I can convincingly perform is +/- Muse level (or AC/DC, in Dino-speak).
It's time to take it to the next level. I feel like I can try to take on something more... shreddy, for the first time.
I picked Sails of Charon.
It's in my top 3 Scorps songs. It is quite shreddy and in the Uli/Yngwie area. It's also "easy". Not that it's easy to play, but the net number of licks to learn is small: The song doesn't have a proper solo section - 90% of the fireworks happen during the extended intro. In short, it ticks all of my boxes.
I'll go by this tab. Sadly, I'm too lazy to pick up the thing by ear.

I'll post a recording when I'm done if all goes well.
Any tips, ideas, suggestions?

Re: Learning My First "Shreddy" Song
Great choice. I will warranty you will learn a great deal out of that. I know I did.
A few years ago I posted here an article of Uli explaining the whole thing, his note choices, the way he went for such and such phrasing. I wish I knew how to find it, because that thing was gold. It was from an old magazine, and I scanned the whole thing.
I even found a YT video of him playing it, which proved to be quite useful as well. Maybe you can find it if you dig on YT.
EDIT: Nevermind, I found the video. Maybe you have seen it.
Now If I can only find that damn magazine... (or the post here)

Wow, thanks a lot. That's a lifesaver. I already learned a lick wrong, and I'm happy to have Uli correct me.
Sails is like the long-lost brother of Gates of Babylon and Stargazer. No other songs fit in that particular style.
