I think Sykes was the only name player whoever got great tone out of the Dirty Fingers, and it was likely due to him adjusting the rest of the rig to work well with them. He also replaced them later (post Blue Murder, I think), btw.  There was a Gibson "Dirty Fingers" pickup in the bridge ...

My first guess was a humidity issue might cause it, but they're not in an overly humid environment.
