spot on re Neil Murray, the US producers i think will have insisted on a more generic, root heavy approach as was in vogue at the time.

even in Purple, Roger was amazingly inventive on tracks like No, No, No and Smoke on the water to name but 2 examples. By Rainbow time Ritchie had clearly instructed him to play a more chuggy, root note approach.

won't comment on whether his best bass work but fully agree the LP is a total peak in rock/metal history,
as you say Geezer is doing some amazing fills, particularly in COTS, underneath Tony's riffs.

having had a chance to go through, the WS demos are different to those on the 1987 30th anniversary release, Bad boys aside which i think is the same. More complete, as in studio early takes, it would appear. Of the BM tracks, Riot is quite different to the finalised version, much slower tempo....

agreed re Spotlight kid, one of my favourite RB riffs, though my first Don listening would have been Down to earth. one of the questions i was going to ask was re writing credits in Rainbow, he had none on DTE, but several on DTC, though i believe did contribute to the writing on the former.
