In my youth / most influential time period, (mid '60s to mid '70s), I ranked him right up there with Clapton, Page, Beck, Kossoff, Hendrix, Blackmore, etc. Alvin played with a cleaner tone than the rest but his style and skill were evident. Alvin knew how to rock a reverb.
It was years ago and I cant remember where it was, but the 'Black Knight' biography touches on the rivalry with Ritchie saying 'Fuck That - I'd blow him away with a broken arm'

I assume this is his 335, but yes its a great sound and I love the sustain.
As Ed said, a great example of what can be achieved with a simple Am Pentatonic.
