Dirty Shirley (Lynch project # ????)

From Bravewords:

Frontiers Music Srl announces Dirty Shirley, a new band project featuring guitarist George Lynch (The End Machine, KXM, Lynch Mob, ex-Dokken) and vocalist/keyboardist Dino Jelusick (Animal Drive, Trans-Siberian Orchestra).

Croatian singer Dino Jelusick, over the course of just one album and one covers EP released with his band Animal Drive, has started to make quite the name for himself in the hard rock and metal scene. More than a few musicians of note have called up Dino to see if he might be interested in collaborating, which he is floored by. This talented young singer has an appreciation and deep respect for the musical heroes who preceded and profoundly influenced him. So, when George Lynch opened the doors to the idea of writing and producing a record together, Dino was more than intrigued. Frontiers, known for releasing interesting collaborations of this nature, was more than happy to be the label home for this project.

The resulting album and band, Dirty Shirley - named after one of the first songs they wrote together - covers a wide spectrum of styles. Classic metal to more “traditional” Lynch Mob oriented sounds and even some hints of the first Badlands album are in the mix. Showcasing a stunning performance from George Lynch - a seemingly bottomless pit of inspired and creative guitar playing - and an absolutely over the top lead vocal performance from Dino, Dirty Shirley is going to be an easy 'must listen' for the hard rock and metal crowd. Evanescence drummer, Will Hunt rounds out the lineup.

Dino says, "This record was done differently from everything else I did so far. George jammed and sent me rough versions and I tried a thousand melodies and lyrics on it. It turned out fantastic and very versatile. From r&b and rock ballads to some very heavy tunes, bluesy stuff, hard rock, rock 'n' roll, grungy vibes... everything. Will was the perfect drummer for this, loud and groovy. I recorded vocals while being on tour with TSO in the bus, every evening when we had a day off. And finished it in Croatia. You gotta listen to the whole album to get the impression of it, not only singles. But the first single will surely kick your ass, so better be prepared!”

George adds, "At its core, this record is built on classic guitar riffage and grooves, but is also infused with eclectic tendencies scattered about that are unexpected and challenging. 80% of the guitar work on this record is rhythms, so I wanted to create a three-dimensional sonic tapestry that complimented the more basic riffs and chords. I tried to add a little twist to everything." He continues, "It was funny because when the label approached me about pairing up with Dino, for some reason I got the impression he was an Italian pop singer. LOL. So I wrote some songs in that vein, haha. ; ) Then when I heard what he was actually all about, I had to duck back into the laboratory and reinvent the wheel. If Ronnie James Dio and young Coverdale had a baby boy, his name would be Dino."

The band is currently exploring live show opportunities for 2020, so stay tuned for more news on Dirty Shirley!

Lineup:

George Lynch: Guitars
Dino Jelusick: Vocals, Keyboards
Will Hunt: Drums
Trevor Roxx: Bass

That singer's name should go over well here ;)
But damn he got some fucking pipes! The Dio and Coverdale comparision by George is spot on, he sounds fantastic.

George also plays very well but it feels a bit like another one of his million projects that goes nowhere. It is often a lot of great stuff but a lot of not-so great material as well and it all kinds of fall short at the end of the day. We'll see, I am very intrigued by Dino at least so I probably check it out :)

Yep, he sounds good, like a mix of Dio and Coverdale, indeed.

The first half of his Ultrasonic album last year was good IMO, but that new song is as generic as it gets. Typical Frontiers Music drivel.

Dino just floored me, for real. What a great singer. I would look forward to this album just for the vocals.

Then again, Dio and Coverdale are two of my all time favorite singers. The fact he sounds so much like them might have something to do with my first judgement.

George sound great too. That middle part sounds A LOT like Priest's Victim of Changes, but he has lifted so  much from the greats over the years that I don't think he will be getting a call from Tipton, Halford and Downing's lawyers this time either.

The song is not exactly breaking new ground, and it's quite generic, but they were probably going for pure ear candy for the nostalgia market anyway.

It sure would!  Probably pronounced Deeno -- everywhere but here. Here we should call him Dino!  Great fucking voice!  Without being an obnoxious ripoff of either guy. Too bad Blackmore didn't know about him for his Rainbow reunions.  Best thing I've heard (from Lynch or otherwise) in quite a while.
In the midst of the sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament.

Why not. Lynch has loads of side projects to break new ground with. His Ultraphonix album won our album of the year last year.
So go ahead, George throw us this heavy bone, gift us this great new singer, make some money, and pay some bills.

True. I just sent the link of this song to my boss (huge metal head) He replied  with just a "wow". This was a pleasant surprise. I am totally getting this album.

I also like that on this track, George didn't overplay on the lead, OR go full-on weird or eclectic as he often does in his side projects.  If anything, he underplayed, but he kept it nice and melodic. Be nice if he's picking his spots on the album to shred out.

Cool song. Singer is very good for sure....besides the Dio and Coverdale comparisons I also hear some Oni Logan and Terry Ilous from XYZ. The last two may not be direct influences....but he reminds me of both guys at times.
  • I'd listen to this guy sing the phonebook. Thinking it will likely be better than that.

Really cool in my opinion. Makes it obvious how much younger Dino is (born 1992, same age as me) but Lynch still looks cool.

Wish they would tour this but probably unlikely. Dino's main band is good too though: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CpOyM14eubg

That's a better song (IMO) than the Lynch one, and in some ways, it sounds less incongruous. It's only one track, but they sound like a more organic unit.

OTOH, the guitars sound so damned digital. I think I'll check them out, though.

DC should retire and let this guy front Whitesnake.

Fully agree. This guy is just awesome.

I seem to have misplaced my earphones and I am at work. But I'll check this for sure later. This guy is the find of the year, IMHO.

The Animal drive song is good...sounds like modern Whitesnake....but have the opposite opinion. The Dirty Shirley track is more interesting and more memorable. I like darker music though. Sounds a lot like Lynch Mob.

  • Listening to Dino's band Animal Drive.  Not brilliant.

  • That Animal Drive song above sounds amazing. Still like the Lynch one more. I'll check the rest of their catalog to see how it fares.

Like Dave, not crazy for the guitar sound, but these are young dudes. They might not be aware of the ways to good tone yet.

My boss sent me this. Dino doing Dio. Thoughts?
