Unexpected Find

And acquisition B)

Yesterday morning started with the Oral Surgeon. Complete extractions.  Not a whole lot of fun.. And being a multiple business owner that doesn't get me out of work for the rest of the day :s
  Towards the end of the day I sat down and thought I'd kill a little time doing what we all do, no, not porn =) but scanning the interweb for guitars. I ran across one that piqued my interest on Reverb! And to my shock, it was located at a music store that I haven't been in for over a year that is right across the street from my business that I was presently sitting in !!  :o

Long story short

My other ST300C now has a sibling. Of course it's sibling has a Carvin decal on the headstock

    Thanks, I can say with absolute certainty that having all your teeth pulled at once is not a good way to start your day. but the day finished a little better

    Killer looking guitar Mike! I have been wanting a Jason Becker model for years. I would like to find a used JB100, which Kiesel does not make anymore....but a JB200 would be cool to.

    Thank you Mark.. I wanted both a JB200C and a JB24 but everything I've read and heard about the JB24 is that it is too trebly and shrill sounding. And for me, I like simple electronics layouts and the JB200 has way too many mini switches and pots. I was actually getting to pull the trigger on a JB24 but this ST300C popped up so I'm tickled B) I also like the Holdsworth head stock.

    That Kiesel blue is stunning.  Very curious, how does it sound?  I played Carvins in the late 80s and 90s...really liked the build quality and necks but the pickups were anemic sounding and best suited for cleans and low to (some) medium gain sounds so I eventually moved on.  That was over 20 years ago.  Occasionally I feel tempted to give Kiesels a try and see if they've upped their pickup game over the years, but of course never run across one to actually try out (especially here in Bangkok).

    I've never been a fan of Carvin/Kiesel pickups. It's an Ash body. It has good resonance but the pups gotta go. I have a set of of SDs, a JB and Jazz neck. Both have chrome covers so because I have to change pickup rings along with the pickups, I ordered a set of chrome rings. We'll see :)

    Looking forward to hearing your take after you switch the pickups out.  Back in the day, Carvin pickups were sized differently from industry standard so switching them out was more hassle than it was worth (I was told).  I asked a tech in Turkey (where I was in the 90s) about switching pickups out and he didn't recommend it.  I sold my Koa DC 127 not long after.  That was probably the best looking and at the same time most generic sounding real guitar I've ever owned.

    You are correct. For the longest time changing Carvin pickups out to Seymour's, Dimarzio's or EMG's required some body work.  The pickups were not direct retro fits. I did it once.. It was quite the PIA..

    Now if you look closely at my original Vintage White ST300C you will see the original Carvin pup rings are a single pup mount ring on one side and two on the other.. So when you change them out you simply have to order new pup ings.. Beats breaking out the dremel and roto zip bit... Below is a pic after I swapped them to  a JB and 59.. That guitar exploded to life and I've since used it on a considerable amount of AA recordings.

    Don't ask what the oriental writing actually says. I don't really know tho I do have a friend that could translate it for me. It is supposed to say "Melody".. But for all I know it could say "I like it up the arse" :s

    Thanks for sharing, that's a "pickup swap" success story if ever I've heard one.  It'd be great to hear a before/after comparison on that gorgeous blue model, or at least your thoughts on the tonal changes.  Maybe it's time to give Carvin a second look after all these years.
