I have been wanting to start some kind of NWOBHM band for quite a while. After a few fruitless attempts at putting a project together with other people I finally gave up... I tried to write some music but my creative dwell was dry. I figured I go back into my riff bank and see if I could find something old that maybe I could re-work just to get started. Found some stuff and started working on that but it also got my creative juices flowing and I wrote a few new riffs. This was last fall, I had to much other stuff going on in my life and never got around to record anything. Now I've finally had some down time and actually recorded two tracks. One re-worked old one and a new one. The new one turned out much better so I decided to focus on that. And actually finished it, more or less.

I've done everything myself. Guitars and bass, obviously. I am happy with how they came out. Actually used BIAS to record the guitars and they came out sounding pretty cool. I've done a bit A/B-ing with my home rig and while there is a big sonic difference in the room but for recording the plugin is probably the better solution for me. Considering what my recording equipment and experience micing my amps will probably end up sounding worse than what this plugin does. It sounds cool enough. Aside from the plugin there is just some slight EQ and compression on it. Otherwise, that is what it sounds like :)

The drums are Logic built-in MIDI, nothing fancy. I suck at programming so I sort of combine the "Drummer" tool and some of my own tweaks at the MIDI files they render.

I am by no means a vocalist. I am pretty bad actually but what the fuck, I rather get do something than sit around looking for someone to do it for me. I tried to working with a guy, that approached me, last spring, ended up just waiting around for him... So, I do it myself until I find someone. There are some tools to get it to sound decent but it is probably the weakest part of the recording.

Well, I want to sort of turn this into an EP or something but in the meantime it would be cool with some feedback if you guys feel like sharing your thoughts I would appreciate it immensely! :)

Keep on rocking!

Sounds good, P.  You can always drop in another vocal if you find someone to sing on it.

My only production note is that it's light on the bass guitar. It's sounds like it's in E. If you're not gonna use low E on the bass (which might help), you probably should bring it up some and/or use some parallel compression.  Go back and listen to The Trooper is your mixing environment and note how the bass sits on that.

I enjoyed it!  It's a catchy tune, especially the chorus (with a nod to the mighty Priest if I'm not mistaken ;) ). The early NWOBHM vibe is definitely there, you could just ramp up the heaviness (more bass might help) and you'll have it down pat. Nothing against the vocals, they get the job done (I wish I could sing like that). Guitars sound good to me. Drum parts are always a major pain in the ass in my experience (I can't write one to save my life, so I use EzDrummer patterns with some minor tweaks).
Congrats again, with a handful of songs like this, there's definitely potential for a cool EP.

Thanks a lot! Appreciate the kind words. Hyped to write/record some more stuff :)

Thats true! If/when this sees the light of day "officially" I'll probably re-track some of it. Just felt I wanted to get some outside perspective on whether I was on track or not :+1:

Will do! Thanks. It is smashed with compression and quite dirty as well. Tried to get that clinky Harris sound, probably overdid it cause I had to turn it down quite a bit to not cut through and taking over the mix too much.

Thanks! Being around for a few years (and not being as vain as you are when you're 21) and talking to and learning a lot from the older guys on the scene there is one thing I really take with me into this. Rather than trying to do something new when playing retro style music, embrace it. The wink to Priest is definitely that. Heard that the "in the dead of night" part fitted over those chords and the song already got sort of a Priest vibe imo I thought it was a cool thing to put in there. We did a lot of that stuff with Gloria Story.

Thanks! You'll be the first to know ;)
